This morning's Mail & Guardian reports that three ATMs were blown up in Gauteng in the early hours of this morning - one in Strijdom Park, Randburg, another in Attridgeville and the third in Orange Farm:
"Three ATMs blown up in Gauteng
Johannesburg, South Africa
30 May 2008 09:05
In a series of three ATM bombings in less than half a day in Gauteng, gangs of robbers on Friday morning made off with undisclosed sums of cash." (Read the full story ...)
I guess they're saving up for Eskom's proposed 53% electricity price hike....? They can't borrow at the new interest rates .... and they weren't after foreign currency...

How on earth are people coping with all those problems. Any time I read your blog I'm kinda glad to be in Spain, but homesickness does hit hard at times.
It's still a very beautiful country with beautiful people, most of whom are dedicated to making it a country to be proud of - and happy in. But we are going through extremely difficult times, where, for too many, just coping is the order of the day. And it can be a tall order.
It will get worse before it gets better; but our leaders have some critical decisions to make. I believe that some serious "pruning" needs to be done at top levels.
However, it's a country worth investing in. We'll get through this - and the sun will shine brightly again here. Despite major bungling at top levels, the people of this country still have their hearts in the right place - and the courage to persevere.
Thankfully nobody was injured in these robberies. I cannot help but wonder what is coming next. Are they simply going to figure out a way of carting off the whole ATM? The mind boggles.
Ha...did made me smile.. Wouldnt it easier to just break it in the night.. From my understanding a bomb explosion attracts ppl (believe me i'm in Colombo,[Sri Lanka] and at least three terrorists bombs go off a week here)..
So it would be really hard to get away with the cash after the bomb right.....
Hi Acromantula,
They do it in the early hours of the morning - between 2:00 and 4:00 am - and they virtually always get away with the cash. They are very slick operators, and from beginning to driving off with the cash takes them about eight minutes, according to nightshift workers who have witnessed such attacks and experienced being held at gunpoint until the getaway.
