Baggage losses at SAA

Today's Mail & Guardian has a report about baggage losses at South African Airways, which is rather disturbing. Apparently in the three month period of 1st December to 29th February, a staggering 7,868 items of luggage were reported missing at Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth and East London airports.

It reminded me of an incident many, many years ago when I worked for SAA. I decided to keep a diary of my overseas flights - crews, what we did, incidents, and so on. After the very first entry (thankfully), my suitcase went missing somewhere between here and Lisbon! (The only time it happened to me, I might add, in three years.) I wasn't worried about the clothes or anything else that might have been in the bag. Just the Diary! It scared the daylights out of me that some stranger somewhere would be reading my diary. I never attempted it again!

Moral of the story? If you're travelling to S.A., don't journalise it - just Blog it!

Pinay Jade, Just For You!

Mwah! Good old South Africa, even during a power failure.
I know, I shouldn't be allowed to use a camera.... but anyway, these are part of the Drakensberg Mountain range, taken in the Royal Natal National Park.

Pipedreamer....the Man!

And I wonder why I can't quit my pipe!

That is me, more than a half century ago! My father thought that an empty little pipe was more dignified than a pacifier. I couldn't have agreed more. But quitting wouldn't be easy.

Thankfully, I wasn't a bottle baby.

Mind you, I guess that might expalin a couple of things too ......

What Happened to Democracy?

This is a country that fought long and hard for democracy; yet our President's approach of quiet diplomacy to the Zimbabwe crisis seems too quiet for credibility. Has his passion for democracy cooled? Or is he just at a loss as to how to handle the man that noboby else seems to know how to handle either?

It is not only Mbeki who is strangely quiet in this regard. There doesn't seem to be any real, effective pressure from anywhere outside of Zimbabwe. A lot of movement, a lot of concern, but effective pressure?

I feel that Jacob Zuma made a valid point when he spoke to Reuters in Berlin on Tuesday: (Mail & Guardian report 22nd April, 2008.)

He is reported as saying:"It's not acceptable. It's not helping the Zimbabwean people who have gone out to ... elect the kind of party and presidential candidate they want, exercising their constitutional right." He went on to say: "I don't think the Constitution says: 'If you like, you can hold the results'. The electoral commission must issue the results because it is actually destroying its own credibility as an institution that is supposed to be neutral."

Is there anyone out there who feels that a result coming out now, or worse, later, would be genuine? I don't.

Last White Farmers Under Siege

I received the following e-mail, forwarded from friends overseas (I have blanked out the phone numbers):

Date: Sat, 5 Apr 2008 19:00:05 +0200
Subject: Last White farmers under siege, instigated by Mugabe

Dear Family and Friends,

Well never thought I would have to do this email do not know if it
may be my last from our farm "Chidza".

At 3.30pm today a lorry load of so called Mugabe brain washed "war-vets"
arrived at our gate to take over our land, equipment and pedigree cattle.
This crazy action is occurring in a country where there is v little
food being produced !

It is now 6 pm and they have been singing their war songs at our gate
for three hours, the atmosphere is violent and more and more of them
have arrived.

We managed to get our daughter Alison and her young son "Little John"
into town and for now it is just John and myself, plus our dogs remaining
in the house on the farm.

They have said that our labour will not work tomorrow . They have
demanded that John must kill them a sheep, which John has flatly
refused to do, so no doubt they will simply kill one for themselves.
None of our paid labour will even attmpt to come to work tomorrow either!
Graham Richards who lives south of us is also under siege at the same
time as us, so this siege of the last remaining whites is an
orchestrated plan.

The Goddards and Deidricks are in the same boat. They have already
taken over Pa-Nyanda Guest Lodge, and Graham and his wife Callie are
now in town.

Alison is at John sisters in Masvingo town and her husband Carl is
expected back from Bulawayo tonight.

Lorna's telephone no. is Zw code xx-xxxxxx ; Ali is on xxxxxxxxx Our
Phone Landline is xxx-xxxxxx Cell Phone Nos. xxx-xxxxxx ; xxx-xxxxxxx
Please pass this email on to as many folk as you would like to , this
illegal action must become "known" thru out the world .

If you know of anyone in the Media, please ensure that they become
aware /are alerted to this evil tyrant's actions to keep power at all costs.
We have to let the world know what is happening.

Well done to Zesa. As they load shedded us and I phoned my friend in
the Zesa Faults and he phoned Harare and they have switched us back on.
So for now please keep all of us in your prayers and we will send a
follow up tomorrow if we are able.

Our love to you all.

John and Joy from Chidza.

Zim-Bob-wee

Bobby, when you gotta go, you gotta go. No matter how you nip and squirm, the country is telling you that it's time for you to p....... to go! If you don't go now, there's going to be the most awful mess for others to clean up.

Shake a leg, Old chap. Go and find yourself a nice bushveld hideaway somewhere in the north where the ice is melting, where you can write your memoirs in peace. Our peace.

THIS is Service Delivery

We have so many examples of lousy, and even non-existent, service delivery in this country, that that it's nice to be able share an incident that impressed me as an example of really good service. That was from Outsurance. And believe me, this is NOT a sponsored blog!!

As I mentioned in a recent blog, I purchased a motor cycle in recent weeks. When I fetched the bike, obviously the question of insurance came up. The sales person gave me the name of a contact in the insurance industry, who would see me right. I phoned straight away and, because the person wasn't at her desk, left a message (with a human, not a machine) to say that I wanted insurance, and that I was referred by so-and-so. I'm still waiting for that person to get back to me.

Meanwhile, as a consequence of all their television advertising, I phoned Outsurance for a quote. The guy I spoke to was impressive. His name was Logan. The first thing that impressed me was when he said: "I see you're phoning from a cell phone. Would you like me to call you back?" I liked very much, because money is tight and it would take time to go through all the details. He wasn't pushy, but he told me about the product that he, very obviously, believed in, with genuine enthusiasm. He covered every detail of their policy. I told him quite bluntly that I wanted to phone around. He didn't push - just asked me politely if I'd mind if he checked in with me later in the day.

He phoned me again later in the afternoon to find out if I'd got other quotes, then heard that I was fairly obviously in a public place (a Mall, as it happened) and asked if it would be more convenient for me to talk later. I gave him a time. At the promised time, he called. He wasn't pushy, just keeping his finger on the pulse of a possible new client. When I said that I wasn't ready yet, he simply - and cheerfully - made another appointment to phone me.

'Things' just got in the way, and, to be honest, I didn't get around to making many calls for quotes, but I really needed cover. When he phoned me again, I felt that his enthusiasm for his company, his product and his prospective customer, was impressive enough for me to want to sign with them. When I gave him the go-ahead, he made sure that he went through the details again of exactly what my cover entailed.

Within hours they had e-mailed me my cover, welcoming letter, etc. The bike wasn't even registered yet. A call from their Help Desk followed to confirm.

Yesterday I eventually got my registration papers and my permanent plates. I realized that I should inform them, but I really didn't feel like spending half a month's premiums on a cell phone call, while I pressed various options and waited for the next available operator (normal procedure for most big companies one phones). So, instead, I just e-mailed the new details to a general e-mail address I'd found.

Once again, within hours I had received an e-mail to say that my notification had been received and passed to the right department, then another e-mail confirming the changes, with the amended policy document attached. I was still reading that, when I received a call from their Help Desk to say that the details had been amended, and was there anything else I required?

I'm impressed. I figure that this is what service should be.

When I told Logan that I was impressed by their service, he just chuckled good-naturedly and said to me: "Get used to it - this is the service you get from us!"

Concept Cars

Just a thought. In South Africa petrol, expensive as it is, is more accessable than electricity - so you wouldn't want to have to charge your car ..... (except to Mastercard, of course).

I guess what we need is a car that runs on promises. We'll never run out of those, I promise you.

Meanwhile, stick to biking.

Oh, Shut Up, Bob!

It seems that Zimbabwe has spoken the magic words!

For once, I wish Mugabe would actually open his mouth and utter the words that we all want to hear. (The present atmosphere is so charged that it could provide enough electricity to keep Eskom going; but how to harness it?)

Say what we want to hear, Bobby, THEN apply the magic words!

(In an "aside" to Hyundai South Africa, your local version of that TV ad has been irritating the hell out of me! The American word "bub" is a slang word used to address a man whose name you don't know! The lady in the original ad wasn't calling the officer "Bob" !!

Good, now I've got that off my chest.

Perhaps if you had Mr. Mugabe commandeering a car that Getz him out of Harare, THAT might make sense ...?)

So, we wait with bated breath until he condescends to speak, then ...

All together now ...
